Germany is calling for the release of Egypt’s ousted president, Mohammed Morsi.

The Foreign Ministry issued a statement Friday calling for an end to “all restrictive measures considering Morsi” and insisting that an organization such as the International Red Cross be allowed to visit the deposed leader.

Morsi was ousted on July 3 by the military following a wave of protests calling on him to step down. The Islamist leader has been kept at an undisclosed Defense Ministry facility since then but no formal charges have been filed.

Ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer also called on all political groups in Egypt, but especially the Muslim Brotherhood, to refrain from any kind of violence and help Egypt’s transition to democracy.
