French Jobless Rate Surges Under Hollande's Socialists

In France, 31,500 people joined the rolls of the unemployed last month. This indicates a greater than 420,000 person increase in the number of unemployed since President Francois Hollande “took office in May 2012.”

According to thelocal.fr, “Hollande’s socialists are struggling to jumpstart France’s stagnant economy and are expected to suffer a major poll failure in the second round of municipal elections on Sunday.”

And while “the labour ministry vowed the government would…’intensify’ its efforts to fight unemployment” in light of the burgeoning unemployment numbers, UMP party’s Jean-Francois Cope said the growing unemployment sends a message. He said last month’s addition of 31,500 persons is “yet another warning shot fired at the government.”

Cope is asking voters to use Sunday’s local elections to “punish” Hollande’s government for “denying reality and refusing to hear the anger of the French people.”
