At least one dead in Fort Lauderdale airport shooting

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Jan. 6 (UPI) — A gunman opened fire at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida on Friday, shooting at least nine people and killing one, police said.

MSNBC reported police took one suspect into custody after the shooting in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2. Delta Air Lines flies out of Terminal 2.

Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer under President George W. Bush was at the airport at the time of the shooting and tweeted about the incident.

“I’m at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. Shots have been fired. Everyone is running,” he tweeted shortly before 1 p.m.

About 15 minutes later he reported that “all seems calm now but police aren’t letting anyone out of the airport — at least not the area where I am.”

MSNBC reported some passengers at the airport were evacuated and held on the tarmac.
