March 6 (UPI) — BlackBerry Ltd. filed a lawsuit against Facebook on Tuesday, accusing the social media company of infringing on its intellectual property.

The smartphone maker filed the lawsuit in a Los Angeles court, saying Facebook messaging apps — including Instagram, WhatsApp Messenger and Workplace Chat — use patented software designed by BlackBerry.

“We have a strong claim that Facebook has infringed on our intellectual property, and after several years of dialogue, we also have an obligation to our shareholders to pursue appropriate legal remedies,” a BlackBerry spokeswoman told Bloomberg.

BlackBerry said it had been involved in “several years of dialogue” with Facebook over the allegation.

“Blackberry’s suit sadly reflects the current state of its messaging business,” said Paul Grewal, deputy general counsel for Facebook. “Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, Blackberry is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight.”
