Sept. 16 (UPI) — Elton John announced Thursday he is postponing his 2021 Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Europe and United Kingdom to 2023 due to an injury.

“At the end of my summer break I fell awkwardly on a hard surface and have been in considerable pain and discomfort in my hip ever since,” he said in an announcement on Twitter. “Despite intensive physio and specialist treatment, the pain has continued to get worse and is leading to increasing difficulties moving.”

John said he was advised to have an operation so there wouldn’t be long-term complications.

The 74-year-old said he will participate in the Global Citizen event on Sept. 25, as he doesn’t want to let the charity down, and said performing five songs is different than performing for three hours and traveling.

He concluded his message noting how patient his fans have been since the COVID-19 pandemic halted his tour.

“I completely feel your frustrations after the year we’ve had,” he said. “I promise you this — the shows will return to the road next year and I will make sure they are more than worth the wait.”

In 2018, the pop icon announced he would be retiring from touring after his 300-date Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

“I’m not going to be touring and traveling the world. My priorities have changed. I have young children,” he said to moderator Anderson Cooper onstage during his live stream event announcing the tour.

John recently released a new version of “Cold Heart,” his duet with Dua Lipa, titled “Cold Heart (The Blessed Madonna Remix).”
