Police evacuate LA-area senior home after shooting, explosion

June 25 (UPI) — Police and SWAT officers surrounded a senior housing facility in Southern California early Monday after reports of shooting there, officials said.

Authorities converged on the Covenant Manor senior home in Long Beach, Calif., looking for an gunman in the building.

Two people were shot, CBS Los Angeles reported.

“All I can confirm at this time is that there has been a shooting,” Long Beach police Sgt. Brad Johnson said. “Not an active shooter situation. Investigation is ongoing.”

Officers previously responded to reports of a loud explosion in the area. Streets were closed and residents of nearby apartment buildings were evacuated.

A later report said that a man matching the description of the suspect was apprehended and taken to a nearby hospital.
