Seth Rogen on ‘Preacher’ violence: ‘If you don’t like that, then, guess what?’

June 24 (UPI) — Preacher executive producer Seth Rogen acknowledges his blood-soaked series, which routinely challenges the concepts of religion and faith, isn’t for everyone.

“I think there’s so many shows on television now that, to us being different is a good thing. And if you don’t like that, then, guess what? There’s 100 million other shows that you have the opportunity to watch,” Rogen said in a recent teleconference with reporters to promote Season 3 of the supernatural drama.

“Our show kept getting protested, which was hilarious, because it’s not an easy show to watch, even,” he said. “You kind of have to go to AMC here and watch it when it airs, or use the AMC app, which not as many people use as one might hope. So, what we also found is people were seeking out the show to complain about it, which was just kind of like a funny dynamic that we saw playing out.”

Season 3, which begins Sunday, will feature the cast addition of Broadway icon Betty Buckley. Rogen said he and his filmmaking partner Evan Goldberg wanted Buckley to play the evil sorceress Gran’ma in Preacher after they saw the Eight is Enough alum in the 2016 horror movie Split.

“We saw Split. Split was awesome,” Rogen said. “And we said, ‘We should get the woman who was in Split.’ And that’s Betty Buckley. And she crushes it. She’s just awesome.”

Infused with pitch-black comedy, Preacher is about a minister with a violent past seeking redemption. It stars Dominic Cooper as Jesse, the title character, Ruth Negga as his off-on girlfriend Tulip and Joseph Gilgun as Cassidy, Jesse’s best friend and a vampire smitten with Tulip.

Rogen and Goldberg — 36-year-old, lifelong friends and creative partners — executive produce the show and have co-directed several episodes.

The next 10 installments will address a full-blown love triangle between the show’s three main characters.

“There’s a big problem with their dynamic,” Rogen said. “Cassidy is in love with Tulip and he cannot be in love with Tulip. And no matter how clear it is that she doesn’t love him back and that she, in fact, loves someone else very much, he just cannot get over it. … No matter what, it rears its head in some destructive way because he just isn’t able to accept the reality of the situation.”

Season 3 of Preacher premieres at 10 p.m. ET Sunday on AMC.
