Vanderbilt Prof on MSNBC: Second Amendment Only Gives Right to Bear Arms, Not Sell Them

Dr. Jonathan Metzl, Vanderbilt University psychiatrist, sociologist and director of the Center for Medicine, Health and Society, spoke Saturday on MSNBC’s “Melissa Harris-Perry” regarding gun violence following President Obama’s executive action on gun control earlier this week.

According to Metzl, the second Amendment only gives Americans the right to bear arms, and it says “nothing about the right to sell arms.”

“As an American citizen who cares about the rule of law, I’m upset for the Constitution because I feel like many of the arguments out there right now about what the second Amendment does and doesn’t say are being completely misrepresented. The second Amendment is about the right to bear arms. It says nothing about background checks; it says nothing about the right to sell arms.”
