The latest survey from Democratic pollster Peter Hart for the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) has Hillary Clinton with a narrow three-point lead over Donald Trump, 44% to 41%.
The margin of error for the poll is 3.8%, making Clinton’s lead a statistical tie. Libertarian Gary Johnson drew 8% support in the survey.
KTNV News quotes Hart producing five highlights from the poll’s internals, including general voter unhappiness with all of the presidential candidates; strong doubt that either Clinton or Trump can handle the Oval Office; a roughly equal degree of partisan loyalty for both Clinton and Trump; and the familiar observation that Trump’s great liabilities are his “temperament and likeability,” while Clinton’s is her lack of honesty.
As with many other polls, Clinton and Trump were both underwater on approval ratings (46%-52% for her, 42%-54% for him), but President Obama currently has a 53% approval rating in Nevada, which may be helpful to Clinton.
The UNLV poll also found a very tight race for the Senate between Republican Joe Heck and Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto, formerly Attorney General of Nevada. Heck currently leads by 47% to 46% in the contest to replace outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, as voters from both parties rally strongly around the respective candidates.
