Poll: Overwhelming Majority of Americans Oppose Immigration Reform Without Border Security
A new Rasmussen Reports poll released on Thursday shows an overwhelming majority of likely voters in America support border security as part of any immigration reform plan. Similarly, the poll shows the majority of likely voters in America oppose any immigration reform package that does not secure the border.
Crosstab polling data provided to Breitbart News shows that 59 percent of likely voters support an immigration reform package that secures the border, whereas 25 percent oppose it and 17 percent are unsure.
The data shows that a plan with no border security provisions, on the other hand, garners support from only 26 percent of likely voters whereas 58 percent oppose a plan that does not secure the border and 16 percent are unsure.
The so-called bipartisan “Gang of Eight” pushing immigration reform, according to NY Sen. Chuck Schumer, plans to give amnesty or legalization to the 11 million illegal immigrants in America before handling border security. “So look, we've come to a basic agreement, which is that first, people will be legalized,” Schumer said on Meet The Press last Sunday. “In other words, not citizens, but they'll be allowed to work, come out of the shadows, travel. Then, we will make sure the border is secure.”
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents’ union president Chris Crane said on a conference call on Wednesday that border security, and enforcement of immigration laws on the interior of the United States, need to be a prerequisite for reform or they will not ever happen.
“If we don’t take care of the enforcement part of this first, it will never happen,” Crane said. “The only thing that will happen is that 11 million illegal aliens will be legalized and 10 to 20 years from now, the nation will again be facing the influx of another 10 to 20 illegal aliens and all the problems and extents associated with that. We will be right back to where we are right now with a failed immigration system.”
