Stevie's Epic Fail: Musicians Ignore Wonder's Florida Boycott

Singer Stevie Wonder thrust himself back into the national spotlight Tuesday when he said he wouldn’t perform in Florida to protest George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin and the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law.

The announcement came on the heels of violent protests involving the case, as well as news that the Rev. Al Sharpton would hold up to a 100 rallies across the country Saturday to object to the Martin case verdict.

So far, not one major singer has joined Wonder’s cause. A good faith Google search found the gospel duo Mary Mary aligning with Wonder, but that appears to be all.

Wonder remains a musical legend, but his career isn’t as white hot as it once was. Should some of today’s top-selling acts join Wonder’s boycott, it could have some cultural resonance. At this point, it appears Wonder is alone in his musical protest, despite the entertainment industry’s overwhelming anger toward the verdict.

Slate.com may be wishing Beyonce, Rihanna or Miley Cyrus join Wonder’s cause, but the more time passes, the less likely that will happen.
