Rapper Common Remembers Michael Brown at MTV Awards
Before announcing the nominees for the best hip hop video at the MTV awards, the rapper known as Common held a moment of silence for Michael Brown, the young African American teenager who was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
“For the past two weeks, the eyes of the nation have been on Ferguson, Missouri,” Common noted. “The people in Ferguson and St. Louis and communities across the country have used their voices to call for justice and change to let everyone know that each and every one of our lives matters.”
Common reminded the audience that the hip hop genre was instrumental in American culture.
“Hip hop has always been about truth. It has been a powerful instrument of social change," he said. "Hip hop has always presented a voice for the revolution,” he added before commencing the moment of silence.
