Holder Says 'Jump' Politico Asks 'How High?'
Further cementing the perception that Politico is little more than an extension of the White House communications department, Editor-in-Chief John Harris announced he will be more than happy to attend a controversial off-the-record briefing by the Department of Justice to address the current controversy over policy regarding the secret seizure of reporters' phone records.
As editor-in-chief, I routinely have off-the-record conversations with people who have questions or grievances about our coverage or our newsgathering practices. I feel anyone - whether an official or ordinary reader - should be able to have an unguarded conversation with someone in a position of accountability for a news organization when there is good reason.
The announcement of the off-the-record meeting created a firestorm amongst Beltway reporters and the New York Times, Associated Press and Huffington Post have all declined to attend out of principal, a burden that Politico, apparently, doesn't seem to have.
