US Steps Up Naval Presence in Middle East

Yesterday, the Pentagon announced that it would be ordering an aircraft carrier to the Middle East a few months ahead of schedule. The US already has one aircraft carrier in the region. Gen. James Mattis of US Central Command requested the extra ship.

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little explained that we need the aircraft carrier there for a “wide range of security issues … This is not about any one particular country or any one particular threat.”

The US has already stepped up its presence of minesweepers in the region in preparation for any possible Iranian mining of the critical Strait of Hormuz.

The world is still a dramatically unsafe place. Yet the Obama administration and its Democratic allies in Congress insist on pushing forward defense cuts as a solution to budget deficits. The latest deployment shows just how bad an idea that is.
