CA Dem Asks Obama to End Import of 'Assault Weapons' in Wake of Yee's Arrest

On April 2nd, U.S. Representative Jackie Speier (D-CA), who represents the 14th congressional district, including southern San Francisco and San Mateo County, asked President Obama “to ban the import of assault weapons” after “the arrest of state senator Leland Yee (D) on gun-trafficking charges.”

According to the San Francisco Examiner, Speier released a statement saying: “The FBI investigation of Leland Yee reveals how easy it is to import lethal assault weapons that were previously banned.”

Speier added:

This case should be a warning to us all that even the most trusted appearing among us are ready to do real harm. Since Congress can pass no meaningful gun control laws, even after the mass killing in Newtown, President Obama should use his pen to slow the import of these weapons, which have no place in our homes.

Yee was indicted last month after trying to help undercover FBI agents obtain “$500,000 to $2.5 million” worth of weapons–“including shoulder fired automatic weapons and missiles…from a Muslim separatist group in the Philippines.”

Because Yee was caught trying to facilitate the purchase and import of missiles from Muslim separatists, Rep. Speier believes Obama should stop importation of AK-47s for law-abiding citizens.
