Sergio Garcia: We'll Serve Tiger Woods 'Fried Chicken'
Sergio Garcia stuck his foot in his mouth again--escalating his feud with Tiger Woods even more--when he said on Tuesday that he would serve Tiger Woods fried chicken if he ever had him over for dinner.
The petulant and mercurial Spaniard who admitted last year that he perhaps did not have the game to ever win a major championship was asked at the European Tour awards dinner if he would "invite Woods over for dinner during next month's U.S. Open."
"We will have him round every night. We will serve fried chicken," Garcia said, according to the Guardian.
According to CBS Sports, Garcia has since apologized, stating, “I apologize for any offense that may have been caused by my comment on stage during the European Tour Players' Awards dinner. I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner.”
In 1997, Fuzzy Zoeller put himself in hot water when he made similar remarks about what Woods would serve for the champions' dinner after Woods historically won the Green Jacket at Augusta.
Garcia and Woods have been engaged in a war of words since the third round of the Players Championship when Garcia blamed Woods for distracting him and making him hit a poor approach shot. Garcia even claimed that he was the "victim" even though video replays show the commotion Woods caused when he took his club out of his bag occurred when Garcia was still over his ball and not during his back swing.
The pesky Spaniard has failed to live up to his potential after the 1999 PGA duel with Woods mostly because Garcia has lacked the mental toughness required to win on golf's toughest and grandest stages.
