Tom Brady May Have Named 'Cougar' Audible Play After Head Coach's Girlfriend

In last Sunday’s incredible comeback win over the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady may have named an audible play after his head coach Bill Belichick’s girlfriend.

Right before his fourth-quarter touchdown pass to tight end Rob Gronkowski that cut Denver’s lead to 3 points after New England had trailed 24-0, Brady was heard saying, “Cougar! Cougar! Linda!”

That play led to the critical touchdown that cut the lead 24-21 in a game New England won 34-31 in overtime. Belichick’s girlfriend is Linda Holliday.

“We’ve got a lot of calls at the line of scrimmage, some are protection calls, some are calls where we’re directing guys, we got run calls, we got pass calls, we got protection calls, we got dummy calls, so you don’t get locked into one or two things … we ended up using them all,” Brady said this week on WEEI’s “Dennis & Callahan” show in diplomatically avoiding the question.

Belichick’s girlfriend did not seem to mind the audible play.

“Well, since it was obviously a good call and a well-executed play, I’ll take a tiny bit of credit — but only for a well-named play,” Linda Holliday told the Boston Herald. “Seriously, the whole team played hard and we all couldn’t be happier, right?!?”
