HOUSTON, TEXAS — Oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. (NYSE:BHI) reported today an increase in oil rigs in operation up 16 to 1,341 worldwide in February. The company reported an increase of 66 rigs compared to February 2013.

Texas continues to hold bragging rights over most rigs currently in operation across the United States with 864. The Permian Basin remains the most active region in the state with 506 sites as the Eagle Ford Shale trails with 222.

According to the company report, “The average U.S. rig count for February 2014 was 1,769,” unchanged compared to January 2014. There was, however, a seven rig domestic increase compared to February 2013.

The report defines rigs in the count as “actively exploring for or developing oil or natural gas.” Houston-based Baker Hughes styles itself, “a leading supplier of oilfield services, products, technology and systems to the worldwide oil and natural gas industry,” and boasts 59,000 employees around the globe.
