Hoops, Catholics, TV Billions & the Political Impact

Hoops, Catholics, TV Billions & the Political Impact

The “Catholic 7″ basketball schools made sports news this week by deciding to break away from the Big East to form a new league that would include an eighth Catholic school (Xavier) and recent Final Four teams VCU and Butler.

As a result, the only two Conferences better than the new “Catholic League,” would be: the Big Ten, with the addition of Maryland and Rutgers (average team ranked 55th and an expected 80% winning percentage if all 347 teams played each other); and the ACC, with the addition of Notre Dame, Syracuse, Pitt, and Louisville (56th, 80%).

The Catholic League’s average team would be within 10 spots in the rankings of those two conferences and 13 spots ahead of the 4th place conference. The Catholic League would be expected to win 76% of it’s games based on every team’s ranking at www.kenpom.com. To keep track of which team is expected to end up in which conference, see the second table further down with an alphabetical list of teams, where they rank, and where their best player ranks.

Why are we providing such a comprehensive look at a sports subject like college realignment?  This story actually touches on several key issues that go beyond sports:

  1. Like the WSJ, get all your news at Breitbart. Adding sports helped the WSJ finally pass the NY Times in circulation, so why should we leave sports to the Huffington Post for things like the current story on President Obama siding with hockey fans and against the greedy owners (surprise!)?
  2. Advertisers flocking to sports as voters TiVo past other commercials. Republican strategists who have been outmaneuvered as Democrats diversified their messaging to texting and other social media need to be on top of conference realignment. TV viewers are skipping many TV commercials EXCEPT for during live sports events, which is why billions of advertising dollars are shifting to sports.
  3. A sports option to avoid a lecture on other sports outlets. While I love them both, if you wanted to take a break from issues to catch a little sports, and instead find yourself being lectured on gun control by Bob Costas or reviewing poll results from ESPN on which athletes favor gay marriage, it’s good to have another sports option here.
  4. The “Catholic League” and the Magisterium? Much as many self-identified American Catholics take pride in taking a stand against the Magisterium when voting for candidates who support issues such as abortion and gay marriage, none of the eight potential Catholic members of the new “Catholic League” agrees with Pope John Paul II’s 1990 call for Catholic schools to be consistent with Catholic teaching (see list of those who did here).

So there are good reasons for conservatives to be aware of what is going on in the sports world these days, and while you may see posts on the Bowl Games and NFL playoffs in the future on Breitbart, let’s start with a table referencing all 347 Division I basketball schools, their conference moving forward, and where they and their most valuable player to date rank, and if that player is expected to make it to the NBA:
