Senator Hagan Loses Ground After Voting for Gun Control

Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC) is a red state Democrat who voted for gun control earlier this year and is now losing ground in the polls.

To be fair, Hagan and other red state Democrats were assured this would not happen.

For example, just weeks weeks after Hagan voted for Senator Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) failed gun control bill on April 17th, various media outlets reported that her support for gun control would actually help her in North Carolina. TalkingPointsMemo said Hagan “actually bolstered [her 2014] re-election prospects by supporting” Manchin’s gun bill.

But the reality is that Hagan is now losing ground.

According to Politico, “Democratic polling firm Public Policy Polling” shows that Hagan only leads her two most prominent GOP contenders by 2 points. She actually “trails Greg Brannon, the Rand Paul-endorsed candidate in the race, by 1 point.”

This same phenomena has been seen in other parts of the country where politicians in gun-friendly states went against their constituents on gun control. On November 19th, Breitbart News reported how supporting gun control has taken Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper (D) from unbeatable to politically unpopular in a matter of months.
