Margot Robbie to Play Disgraced Figure Skater Tonya Harding in Biopic

Australian bombshell Margot Robbie will star in and co-produce a biopic about disgraced former Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding.

According to Deadline, Robbie will star as the former skater in I, Tonya, which does not yet have a director. The industry site further reports the 25-year-old Wolf of Wall Street starlet is looking for a someone to build the project around her.

Harding won her first national title and became the first woman to complete a triple axel in competition in 1991.

In 1994, Harding’s husband Jeff Gillooly organized an attack on fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan, against whom Harding was scheduled to compete at the Olympic trials. Kerrigan was left seriously injured and was prevented from participating in the U.S. Championships.

Gillooly later pleaded guilty to helping Harding plan the attack on Kerrigan, and Harding avoided jail time by pleading guilty to hindering the investigation into the attack.

Harding was banned from the sport for life and has since appeared on numerous reality TV shows and briefly forayed into boxing.

Harding defeated Paula Jones, the former Arkansas state employee who sued President Clinton for sexual harassment, on FOX’s Celebrity Boxing in 2002:

No further details about I, Tonya are available, and the film is currently seeking financing.

Robbie stars in Suicide Squad, which will debut in August.
