$25k Offered for Best Solution to California’s Traffic Problems

Want to make $25,000 for an idea? If you create the best answer to the state of California’s question, “What’s the best way to improve the state’s transportation system?” you could become the lucky winner.

CBS San Francisco reports that the state has come up with the “25K Find A New Way” contest, in which submissions will be judged according to innovation and feasibility. The deadline for submission is October 13, 2015 and must not exceed three single-sided 8.5” x 11” pages and 500 words, according to the contest’s website. The website states that one-half of the overall score for the submission will be derived from its innovative nature, one-quarter of the total will come from its potential benefit, and one-quarter will be drawn from how practical and feasible its implementation would be.

The winner will be announced December 31, 2015. Any California resident may enter the contest, with the exception of current and retired State of California employees and their immediate family members. If under 18, the contestant must obtain his or her parent or guardian’s permission.

Caltrans, which will supervise the contest, is responsible for over 50,000 road and highway lane miles, over 12,500 state bridges, and over 400 public-use and special-use airports and heliports.

In September 2014, Reason.org ranked the 50 states’ overall performance and cost-effectiveness of their state highway systems; California ranked 45th.
