OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Sonny Gray has not allowed a hit through six innings of his opening-night start for the Oakland Athletics against the Texas Rangers.
Gray had allowed only two baserunners Monday night at the Oakland Coliseum. He hit a batter with a pitch in the third inning, and A’s left fielder Ben Zobrist dropped Leonys Martin’s sinking liner for a two-base error in the sixth.
Gray needed only 74 pitches to get through six innings as the A’s tried to snap a 10-game losing streak on opening day, a major league record. Zobrist backed Gray with a two-run homer in the first, and Oakland added two more runs in the fourth for a 4-0 lead.
Gray drew his second consecutive opening-day assignment, the first A’s pitcher to do so since lefty Barry Zito in 2005 and 2006.
