Los Angeles (AFP) – Quarterback Josh McCown played the last three quarters of Cleveland’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday with a broken left collarbone, the NFL team confirmed on Friday.

McCown, who will miss this Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins but is otherwise described as “week-to-week”, visited the locker room after taking a hit in the first quarter against the Ravens but returned to finish the game.

Despite his efforts, the Browns were unable to hang on to a 20-2 lead and were beaten 25-20.

“I was probably most disappointed for Josh,” defensive coordinator Ray Horton said Friday. “He went out there and played with a broken collarbone … until the last throw had a chance to win … for me, it was disappointing that we didn’t win it for Josh.”

McCown, 37, broke his right collarbone in 2015. He was in the starting lineup last week after Robert Griffin III broke a shoulder in the Browns’ season-opening defeat to Philadelphia, an injury that will sideliine him at least eight weeks.

After just two weeks the Browns have already lost six starters to injury. Among the missing, center Cam Erving has a bruised lung, defensive end Carl Nassib had surgery on his broken hand and receiver Corey Coleman broke his hand in practice on Wednesday and is expected to miss six weeks.

“I’m not blinking,” Browns head coach Hue Jackson said. “When you are changing things and you are trying to come from where we’ve been these are the things that you have to go through.

“These guys are going to come back and hopefully come back and hit the ground running where they were,” he said. “We hate it but these things do happen.”

Rookie Cody Kessler will become the third quarterback to start this season for the team when they play the Dolphins in Miami.
