Counter-terror police seek absconder

Counter-terror detectives were hunting Tuesday a 28-year-old man of Somali origin thought to have absconded after he failed to meet his overnight residence condition.

Ibrahim Magag is subject to a Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures notice (TPIMs), which were brought in to replace control orders. The legal orders restrict movements, contacts and computer use.

He is not considered to represent a direct threat to the British public, said Scotland Yard.

Police were alerted on Wednesday evening. The Counter Terrorism Command immediately launched inquiries to trace him.

A court-imposed anonymity order was lifted to allow a public appeal.

The last possible sighting of Magag, who is of Somali origin, was in Camden, north London, at around 5:20pm on Boxing Day. He was wearing a khaki robe.

Security Minister James Brokenshire said: “National security is the government’s top priority and the police are doing everything in their power to apprehend this man as quickly as possible.

“The Home Secretary (Theresa May), on police operational advice, today applied to the High Court for an order protecting anonymity to be lifted in order to assist with their investigation.

“The TPIM in this case was intended to prevent fundraising and overseas travel. We do not believe his disappearance is linked to any terrorism planning in the UK.”

It was revealed in March that nine people were subject to TPIMs.

Those subject to a TPIM can be ordered to stay overnight at a specified address and report daily to a police station.

Other measures include a ban on travelling abroad, contacting particular individuals or visiting certain areas.
