MLS playoff match postponed by snow

Heavy snow forced the postponement of the New York Red Bulls’ do-or-die Major League Soccer playoff clash with DC United.

Gale force winds and snow on Wednesday lashed the New York area in the wake of superstorm Sandy, which has left tens of thousands of people without electricity.

Officials first delayed the kickoff of the MLS Eastern Conference semi-final, second-leg match at Red Bull Arena for about an hour.

But after watching the grounds crew struggle to clear the pitch, MLS vice president Nelson Rodriguez rescheduled the match to Thursday night.

“In the end you can’t jeopardize the safety of the athletes,” Rodriguez told the NBC Sports Network.

It was the second time bad weather has disrupted the two-match tie. The clubs drew 1-1 in the opener at RFK Stadium on Saturday in a match that was moved to Washington because of the impact of Sandy on the New York area.
