Calidoscopio wins Breeders' Cup Marathon

Calidoscopio won the $500,000 1 3/4-mile Marathon on Friday, the second race in the two-day, 15-race Breeders’ Cup championship at Santa Anita racetrack.

The nine-year-old bred in Argentina became the oldest horse to win a Breeders’ Cup race, and was serenaded in Spanish in the winner’s circle as trainer Guillermo Frankel and the rest of his connections accepted the trophy.

With Aaron Gryder inthe irons, Calidoscopio swept fast and late to win by 4 1/4 lengths ahead of Grassy, trained by Martin Jones and ridden by Garrett Gomez.

Favorite Atigun, trained by Kenneth McPeek and ridden by Mike Smith, ran strong early but settled for third.
