A British manager with the US oil giant ExxonMobil was shot dead outside a restaurant in Brussels this month, police said Friday.
Police said they were looking for two men in connection with the killing, in which four shots were fired as the victim was leaving a restaurant with his wife on October 14.
An ExxonMobil spokeswoman named the dead man as Nick Mockford, a department manager at the company’s office near the Belgian capital.
One man attacked Mockford’s wife, trying to snatch her handbag, while a gunman fired four shots at him, police said.
The ExxonMobil spokeswoman said: “Mr Mockford, a British national, was a department manager at our office close to Brussels, but we have no indication that the incident was work related.
“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues and we are supporting them as best we can at this very difficult time.”
Britain’s Daily Telegraph quoted a relative of Mockford, speaking anonymously, as saying: “We are all confused about what has happened. Nick was a genuinely lovely, clean-cut, mild mannered, family man.
“I don’t think he would put up a fight or argue with someone trying to steal his company car. He was shot so calmly and so quickly.”
