The nephew of disgraced television star Jimmy Savile has backed calls for his body to be exhumed from a Scarborough cemetery and cremated
Guy Marsden said he “100%” supported bereaved families who have asked for Savile to be removed from the town’s Woodlands Cemetery.
Police say around 300 people have come forward with abuse claims linked to Savile, which would make the eccentric entertainer one of the most predatory sex offenders in British history.
“If it was one of mine who was buried there, I wouldn’t like it if someone like Jimmy was in the same place,” Marsden said.
“Our thoughts are with their loved ones.
“At the end of the day, they say his grave can be exhumed and they can cremate Jimmy Savile and they can put him in a private place known only to the family. But who’d want to visit him anyway? I wouldn’t want to know.”
Marsden said no formal plans had been made to remove Savile, who died a year ago, from his resting place.
The headstone has already been removed from Savile’s grave in the wake of the scandal.
Calls to exhume the late television star were made public at a Scarborough Borough Council meeting on Monday, where one councillor said relatives of a young child buried near the late presenter’s grave were particularly distressed.
Council leaders said only Savile’s family could decide whether to remove him, and that they had no such plans.
