Weatherman Talbot arrested over sex abuse claims

TV weatherman Fred Talbot, known for presenting weather reports from a huge floating map of Britain, was arrested on Tuesday over historic sex abuse claims at a school where he taught.

Police arrested Talbot, 63, on suspicion of three counts of indecent assault and four of inciting a child to commit acts of gross indecency. He remains in custody.

During the 1990s, Talbot presented weather reports for ITV’s This Morning programme from the giant map which floated in Liverpool’s Albert Dock.

The claims relate to Talbot’s time as a biology teacher at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys in Trafford, Greater Manchester, during the 1970s and 1980s.

“The four victims were pupils,” Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.

Police raided Talbot’s home in Bowdon, Cheshire, along with a series of other addresses in December as they investigated historic claims from the school.

Detective Chief Inspector Koran Sellars, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “Since allegations were made to police in December we have made good progress with this investigation and with tracing and speaking to former pupils of Altrincham Grammar School.

“However, as part of our ongoing inquiry, I am eager to trace anyone who attended the school between the early 1970s and 1980s, who feel(s) they may have information to assist the police investigation.”

Talbot is currently weatherman for Granada Reports, an ITV regional news show for the northwest.
