May 3 (UPI) — Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the social media giant will hire 3,000 employees to monitor what people stream through its Live feature, through which some users have broadcast violent incidents.
“Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen people hurting themselves and others on Facebook — either live or in video posted later. It’s heartbreaking, and I’ve been reflecting on how we can do better for our community,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post. “If we’re going to build a safe community, we need to respond quickly.”
Zuckerberg said Facebook will add 3,000 people to its global community operations team in addition to the current 4,500 employed to “to review the millions of reports we get every week, and improve the process for doing it quickly.”
The team will review both live videos and uploaded content.
“These reviewers will also help us get better at removing things we don’t allow on Facebook like hate speech and child exploitation,” Zuckerberg added. “And we’ll keep working with local community groups and law enforcement who are in the best position to help someone if they need it — either because they’re about to harm themselves, or because they’re in danger from someone else.”
Recent incidents in which Facebook Live was used to broadcast violence include the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl in March and Steve Stephens’ killing of a an elderly man on a Cleveland city street in April.
