LOS ANGELES, July 13 (UPI) — Reese Witherspoon led fans in celebrating Legally Blonde’s 15th anniversary Wednesday.

The 40-year-old actress, who played Elle Woods in the 2001 comedy, marked the occasion by sharing a clip of herself doing the bend and snap on Instagram.

“I have had so many women say, ‘I went to law school because of ‘Legally Blonde,’” Witherspoon said in an interview with the photo-sharing site.

“It actually had a meaningful story that we had no idea would resonate so strongly with so many people,” she explained. “And it was about female empowerment. It wasn’t necessarily about the girl getting the guy.”

Legally Blonde follows Elle, a sorority girl who enrolls at Harvard Law School in an effort to win back her ex-boyfriend. The movie was a critical and commercial success that inspired a sequel and a Broadway musical.

“I am really proud of what we created,” Witherspoon said. “It makes me so proud that people watch it and it’s still relevant and it reaches so many people all over the world. It’s very rare you create a character that people know that well.”

Witherspoon was open to the idea of returning for Legally Blonde 3 when she appeared on Fashionably Late with Rachel Zoe in October. The actress is presently slated to star in HBO’s new series Big Little Lies.

“A lot of writers over the years have come up with different ideas for [another sequel],” she revealed. “I think we’re ready to see Elle and see what she’s been up to lately.”
