Edinburgh (AFP) – Mohammad Shahzad’s 84 laid the groundwork for Afghanistan’s 78-run win over Scotland under the Duckworth/Lewis method in a rain-affected second one-day international in Edinburgh on Wednesday.
Monday’s first of a two-match series had been abandoned due to bad weather, and rain again interrupted proceedings at the Grange.
Opener Shahzad’s 91-ball knock, including eight fours and two sixes off consecutive deliveries helped Afghanistan get to 178 for six in the 38th over before rain halted the tourists’ innings.
Shahzad fell 16 runs short of a century when he was caught behind off Ruaidhri Smith.
When play resumed at 1600 GMT, Scotland were set a revised victory target of 211 from 36 overs under the Duckworth/Lewis method.
Their chase got off to a bad start when experienced opener Kyle Coetzer fell for a second-ball duck when caught off Dawlat Zadran.
Craig Wallace made a brisk 33, including three sixes but when he was caught and bowled by Rashid Khan, Scotland were 59 for three.
From then on the home side lost wickets steadily and the match ended when Scotland were dismissed for 132 in the 8th over when Con de Lange was caught off Mirwais Ashraf to give Afghanistan a series-clinching victory.
