Anonymous Declares War on ISIS

“Expect us.”

That’s the motto of the hacking group and social movement Anonymous. It typically appears on their videos and messages when they announce a new target. Following the recent massacre in Paris, it seems their new target is the Islamic State.

In a video recently uploaded to YouTube, a member of the group, wearing a signature Guy Fawkes mask, reads out a message of “war” against ISIS.

“Expect massive cyber attacks. War is declared. Get prepared,” the masked man says in French. “Anonymous from all over the world will hunt you down. You should know that we will find you and we will not let you go. We will launch the biggest operation ever against you.”

Anonymous has in many ways become a victim of its own mainstream success. It captured the public imagination in the late 2000s and early 2010s, with daring operations against multinational corporations and authoritarian governments all around the world, but later became a fractured identity, with many different groups vying for the “Anonymous” mantle. On the imageboard 4chan, where the movement first arose, “expect us” has become a byword for teenage edginess.

Nevertheless, the latest dispatch from Anonymous is attracting considerable attention. The video has been viewed over 2 million times since it was uploaded on Saturday, the day after the Paris attacks.
