Texas Residents Urged to Conserve Electricity in Winter Blast Monday

In response to a burst of cold weather sweeping Texas, the state’s main grid operator asked citizens to use as little electricity as possible on Monday morning.

Director of System Operations for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, Dan Woodfin, said, “The cold weather and accompanying wind that has spread across the region today is expected to result in high electric demand for tomorrow’s peak. We have asked all available generation units to be prepared for tomorrow morning’s demand, but we believe conservation by consumers also will be necessary to help maintain overall reliability during this extreme winter weather.”

During the alert period, Texans have been urged to unplug all unused electric devices, keep thermostats set at 68 degrees or lower, and refrain from using large appliances like dish washers.

The requests come only a few months subsequent to “rolling blackouts,” when Texas power plans unexpectedly shut down due to a steep demand for heating.
