An Indiana man appeared in a state court on Monday on charges he raped and murdered a one-year-old girl. The man has allegedly confessed to a relative that he committed the crimes.

Kyle Parker, 22, reportedly confessed to his stepfather that he raped and then smothered one-year-old Shaylyn Ammerman, according to an Indianapolis Star report by Madeline Buckley. The uncle told police he had seen his step-son walking away from the home in the middle of the night. Other friends reportedly told police Parker was attracted to young girls.

An autopsy performed on the baby revealed a “sustained sexual assault,” the Star reported. The medical examiner said it was the “worst case of sexual trauma she had seen in her career,” according to the affidavit.

Bond was denied to Parker who was ordered to remain in jail. He has requested a public defender, citing his inability to work. His last job was reported to be at a nursing and rehab center in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Parker was arrested last Thursday night after police found the body of the missing child. She went missing from her grandparents’ home. Parker is reported to be a friend of the family and had been at their home the night Shaylyn disappeared. He had been drinking with the grown sons of the grandmother, Tamera Morgan.

Morgan said she had checked on the baby throughout the night after putting her to bed at about 8:30 p.m. The last time she saw the child was about 1:30 a.m. When she awoke the next morning, the baby was gone.

A search was conducted for two days for the missing baby. Her lifeless and abused body was found in a remote area near Gosport, Indiana, police said.
