Trump’s Immigration Plan Finds Favor in California

President-Elect Donald Trump may not be well-liked in the deep blue state of California, but he is seeing growing support for his proposal to enforce federal immigration laws.

A new poll by the Hoover Institution Golden State found that only 36 percent of California residents say Trump will be successful in his presidency, but a significant 42 percent said they believe Trump’s plan to close immigration from countries with rampant terrorism would make their state “better off,” POLITICO reported.

Only 35 percent of residents said the policy shift would make the state “worse off,” while 23 percent did not hold a view.

California has one of the highest illegal immigrant populations, but 44 percent of respondents said Trump’s plan to deport those illegally present would make them “better off,” while 39 percent disagreed.

Trump has also promised to defund sanctuary cities, which are locales that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials, specifically when it comes to handing over individuals with detainers.

When California residents were asked if Trump’s plan to end sanctuary cities across the country would make their state better, 41 percent agreed while 36 percent did not. Only 18 percent of residents said they were still undecided on the issue.

Trump’s specific plan to cut off federal funds for sanctuary cities is a much more divisive issue in the state, as it would impact multiple metropolitan areas. Thirty-eight percent of residents said they supported Trump’s plan, but 40% voiced opposition.

Trump’s populist, economic nationalism agenda is also more popular in California than many may give credit.

The president-elect’s plan to lower personal income taxes was wildly popular, with 55 percent of residents giving support while only 23 percent who said they disagreed with the plan.

The prospects of Trump lowering business taxes is also quite popular, with 45 percent saying it would make California better, and only 31 percent opposed.
