A Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy and POP (or problem-oriented policing) officer who was shot and killed on Friday, allegedly by a twice-deported Mexican illegal alien, was remembered by his community on Sunday.
A candlelight vigil was held in honor of deputy Danny Oliver’s hard work to keep members of his Foothill Farms community safe and out of harm’s way.
“His shoes are going to be very very hard to fill,” said Debra Pounds who attended the memorial, according to the local CBS News affiliate in Sacramento.
“RIP Danny, we all loved him,” wrote one little girl, who was barely tall enough to write on one of the many blue posters attached to a fence where community members and friends of the late deputy had convened to post notes to his family.
His friend from school Moses Mercado told CBS that he was very “sad to hear that a good man like that” had been “taken away… God bless the Oliver family,” he said.
Oliver was shot point-blank in the head by a man he had approached in a suspicious vehicle in a Motel 6 parking lot at approximately 10:20 am on Friday. He had not had any time to react and died from his wound.
Oliver leaves behind a wife and two daughters. A Facebook page devoted to his memory named “Lights on for Deputy Danny Oliver,” has accrued almost 9,000 followers all over the nation. That number is expected to grow.
The page encourages everyone to shine a light on their porch at dawn every day to honor Oliver’s memory. They suggest a blue light, which mirrors the thin blue line that serves as a symbol for fallen officers in the United States and Canada.
