On Tuesday, moments after Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said politicians should not dodge questions, especially on social issues, he promptly refused to give his opinion on the Supreme Court’s momentous 5-4 ruling in the Hobby Lobby case.
The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the federal government cannot, under Obamacare, force closely-held companies to pay for abortion-inducing pills–like Plan B–that go against the religious beliefs of the employers. Hobby Lobby did not object to paying for regular birth control pills or other types of contraception.
On Squawk Box, after Christie mentioned that he was a pro-life governor of a blue state, he was asked what he thought of the ruling.
“Who knows? Is the Supreme Court right?” Christie said, as NJ.com reported. “The fact is, when you’re an executive, your Supreme Court makes a ruling, and you’ve got to live with it unless you can get the legislative body to change the law or change the Constitution.”
As NJ.com also noted, Christie had said previously in the interview that “the Republican candidate should tell people what they feel on issues that people ask you about.”
“If you get asked a question, answer it,” Christie asserted.
