Current and former cabinet secretaries are among the millions of federal employees whose personal information may have been compromised by a data breach at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), government officials tell ABC News.
Last week OPM revealed that it had identified a data security breach and said it would be notifying the approximately 4 million current and former federal employees whose data may have been affected.
ABC News reports that officials believe cabinet secretaries’ personal information was among the data compromised.
FBI, Secret Service, US Marshals Service and Drug Enforcement Administration are among the law enforcement agencies that may had been affected according to ABC’s report.
Employees at agencies including the CIA and NSA are believed to not have been impacted unless they had worked in at other affected agencies in the past — nor were members of the military or Department of Defense.
Since President Obama and Vice President Biden’s information is also stored differently, according to ABC, they are not thought to have been compromised either.
The breach is said to have the marks of a Chinese hack.
OPM announced the breach on Thursday, saying that it was discover in April as it was updating its cybersecurity protections.
