On July 18, Breitbart News reported on Obama’s secretive gun ban for Social Security beneficiaries who are unable to manage their own finances. On July 21, Rep. Ralph Abraham (R-LA-5th) put forth legislation to block that gun ban.

According to the LA Times, the gun ban for Social Security beneficiaries would use the current background check system for gun purchases to deny gun rights to those who are unable to manage their own affairs for a multitude of reasons—from “subnormal intelligence or mental illness” to “incompetency,” an unspecified “condition,” or “disease.”

And as the Veterans Administration’s use of such categories has already demonstrated, lumping people together for reasons as divergent as “subnormal intelligence” and “disease” means many who pose no threat to themselves or others will nevertheless be viewed as a possible threat in the eyes of bureaucrats reviewing medical records.

Under such parameters this ban could take away the Second Amendment rights of upwards of “4.2 million” Social Security beneficiaries.

Using a Facebook post, Representative Abraham explained that “Social Security has never before taken part in the background check system in the way the President is proposing.” And to stop Social Security from being used in this way now, Abraham introduced the Social Security Second Amendment Protection Act.

He also released a statement, saying:

President Obama will stop at nothing to take guns away from anyone he can. My bill would re-institute the rule of law and prevent bureaucrats in Washington from deciding who can and cannot exercise their fundamental right to keep and bear arms. In this nation, everyone is entitled to due process, and that includes those on Social Security.
