Immigration officials say that a man who allegedly ran over a police officer with his SUV twice is in the country illegally and has been deported three times, according to local reports.

Eduardo Gonzalez-Rios is currently being detained on an immigration hold and has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault against a public servant, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The Dallas Police Department says that after being escorted out of the Kalua Discotheque early Monday morning, Gonzalez-Rios got into his SUV and allegedly ran over Senior Cpl. Ed Lujan, Gonzalez-Rios then allegedly backed back over Lujan.

“After interviewing witnesses, Detectives determined that in addition to striking and running over a Dallas Police Officer, the subject put his SUV into reverse and backed over the officer causing additional serious injuries,” a DPD release explains.

Officers Sgt. Shannon Browning and Sr. Corporal Antonio Barrientos fired at Gonzalez-Rios, who was shot in the arm, according to WFAA-TV.

Lujan suffered severe injuries from the attack but was in stable condition after being taken to  Parkland Memorial Hospital.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement told WFAA-TV that illegal immigrant Gonzalez-Rios has been removed from the U.S. three times prior to Monday night’s attack.

The first time in November 2004 Gonzalez-Rios was caught near Harlingen, Texas and quickly deported back to Mexico the same day. In May 2005 he was again detained near Harlingen and deported the same day.

In September 2011 he was detained in Kansas City, Missouri and deported days later.

“I think this is an example of why we are so concerned about securing the border,” said Dallas County Republican Party chairman Wade Emmert told WFAA-TV.

The Dallas Morning News reports two funds have been set up to help Lujan with medical expenses.
