Parents — who are expecting fraternal twins but were told their son will likely not survive — have experienced a poignant moment while viewing the sonogram: Their son’s hand grasping his twin sister’s hand in the womb.
The McIntire family of Kansas was told their son, named Mason, who weighs only nine ounces, has a hole in his heart and an abnormally developed brain. His sister Madilyn weighs more than two pounds, reports WNEM.com.
His only chance of survival would be heart surgery,” mother Brittani McIntire says, “but they wouldn’t do heart surgery on him because of his brain.”
Doctors said Mason — pictured on the left in the photo — had his hand wrapped around the finger of his growing twin sister Madilyn.
“Most twins, when she’s trying to take pictures and stuff, they’re kicking each other and hitting each other and she said … it seems like she was very protective over him,” Brittani added. “I know I’m holding him, I’m carrying him but I just want to be there for him. And knowing she’s the only one who can actually be there and holding onto him through it, so it’s comforting to know that, if he does pass, he won’t be alone.”
“We know that we have a piece of them together that will last forever and is special to have,” father Ian McIntire says.
