Karin Housley, the Republican candidate running for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota, is demanding the state launch a full investigation into allegations of domestic abuse against Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN).

“I’m calling for the Minnesota Office of the Attorney General to conduct an immediate investigation into the allegations of domestic abuse made against Keith Ellison,” a statement released by Housley reads. “As the state’s chief legal division, the attorney general’s office can provide an impartial investigation into the serious allegations.”

“Recent calls for a congressional ethics investigation, made by Keith Ellison and echoed by my opponent, amount to nothing more than political cover; Ellison will have left Congress by the time an investigation could be completed,” the statement continues.

The Minnesota Republican Senate candidate says the “substantiated” allegations of sexual assault against Ellison raise series questions about whether Ellison has the mental fitness to serve as the state’s Attorney General.

Housley is running against Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN), the Minnesota Lieutenant Governor appointed to replace then-Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), who resigned from the Senate after he was hit with multiple accusations of sexual assault.

In the wake of decades-old allegations recently leveled against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh,  Democrats have remained all but silent regarding claims of domestic abuse against Ellison by ex-girlfriend Karen Monahan.

Last month, the Minnesota Democrat and Deputy Chair of the Democratic National Committee announced he would request the United States House Committee on Ethics to probe Monahan’s allegations. “Today I am announcing that I will submit a request for a House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations against me raised by a former partner,” Ellison said in a statement last Wednesday. “I am taking this step now because I am innocent and eager to see this entire matter resolved.”

In an interview with the New York Times, Monahan alleged she was the subject of “narcissist abuse” at the hands of the Ellison, who has been in Congress since 2007.

“Narcissist abuse is very difficult to understand,” Monahan told the paper. “It’s the gaslighting, it’s the habitual lying, it’s the making it seem like it was my fault for even asking why something happened.”

“It was crazy-making,” she added. “My hair was falling out, I was anemic — narcissist abuse is horrid.”
