Actor Jared Leto sent some bizarre “gifts” to his Suicide Squad cast mates Will Smith and Margot Robbie, including used condoms — but it was all in preparation for getting into his movie character, the villainous Joker.
The 44-year-old actor told E! that he sent his cast mates anal beads, used condoms and even a dead pig during the filming of the upcoming Warner Bros./DC blockbuster, which centers on a group of classic comic supervillains who must undertake dangerous missions for the government in exchange for their freedom.
“I can’t even begin to tell you the things I got [from Jared],” Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn in the film, told E!. “By that point, I feel like I knew the Joker a bit, so it wasn’t as alarming, but yeah, there were many instances where I didn’t know what to expect from Jared.”
Smith, who plays Deadshot in the film, told the outlet that the inappropriate gifts were a reflection of how far Leto was prepared to go to get into character.
“Jared went full Joker. The rule, generally, is never go full Joker, but he really set the tone,” Smith said. “He wasn’t playing with it, he was dead serious. As an actor, he was going in… he really jarred [us].”
In an interview with Vanity Fair earlier this year, actress Viola Davis, who plays government agent Amanda Waller in the film, said that Leto even brought dead animals into the mix.
“He had a henchman who would come into the rehearsal room, and the henchman came in with a dead pig and plopped it on the table and then he walked out,” Davis told VF. “And that was our introduction to Jared Leto.”
The latest trailer for Suicide Squad debuted during April’s MTV Movie Awards. The new footage gives fans an extended look at Leto’s Joker, Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Smith’s Deadshot and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s Killer Croc.
Suicide Squad premieres in theaters August 5.
