FAIRFIELD, Connecticut – A 69-year-old man was charged Monday with multiple counts of illegal possession of explosives and first-degree reckless endangerment, and one count of the manufacture of bombs. According to the police, Joseph C. Callahan freely discussed a wide array of potentially explosive chemicals he had collected, when officers entered his home last week.
When officers asked him about the large containers they found in his garage, Callahan explained they were filled with 100 pounds of ammonium nitrate. According to police, he was very specific, saying “that’s the chemical used in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.” Then he allegedly pointed to vats that he claimed contained the same chemicals used in in the Oklahoma City bombing.
The arrest warrant also states that Callahan professed that he was making a bomb for Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones but couldn’t remember if had attached a fuse to it. The rocker lives in Weston but was not available for comment according to his publicist.
Callahan’s lawyer, Richard Meehan describes his client as “a delightful gentleman who never had any intention to make a bomb and never intended to hurt anybody.”
That being said, Police also discovered 274 guns, legally owned by Callahan. According to the warrant, he also admitted to taking prescription medications along with a mixture of medications that had not been prescribed for him.
Moreover, the warrant states he told officers he made homemade explosive devices by filling tubes with flash powder and attaching a fuse on his basement work bench. Police found several homemade explosive devices in the basement along with other explosive devices in various locations in his house, according to the warrant.
Sounds like a “delightful gentleman.”
