Japanese Company Unveils Wine for Cats

JAPAN – A pet supplement company launched a new product yesterday that is an example of how much spare time one might have if working for a pet supplement company- the product: bottled wine for cats.

It’s called “Nyan Nyan Nouveau.” In Japanese, “nyan nyan”can refer to a cat’s meow but it can also be a reference to two people making boom boom. However, in this case, it refers to the former. “Nouveau” appears to be an homage to Beaujolais Nouveau, a red wine made from Gamay grapes which is particular popular in Japan during the Christmas season.

The wine doesn’t actually have alcohol in it which leads me to wonder why I’m even writing about this story. It does, however, contain juice made from Cabernet grapes as well as Vitamin C and catnip. The lovely combination supposedly tastes like red wine.

The manufacturer, B&H Lifes, developed the drink for those those wanting to celebrate birthdays or Christmas with their beloved cats.  These people are also known as “lonely.’

Nyan Nyan Nouveau is priced at 399 yen (US$4) a bottle.

The wine has a complex bouquet in which only the keenest of wine drinkers might detect a faint cedar, a whisper of black currant and just the slightest hint of a dog’s ass.
