Suspect in Dog Fighting Ring, Taken Down By Pit Bull While Fleeing Police

FLORENCE COUNTY – Florence County sheriff’s deputies arrested eight suspects early Saturday morning after discovering a dog fight in progress at a vacant lot. According to WFMB, the police were originally dispatched to the location as part of a lengthy drug investigation.

According to Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone, many suspects fled to a field and to the woods nearby but were apprehended.  In a blissful display of irony, one suspect, according to Boone, was taken into custody after one of the dogs involved in the fighting “took him down.” That dog escaped but another pit bull was turned over to Florence County Environmental Services.

The sheriff’s office says it is obtaining additional search warrants to investigate a possible dog fighting ring.

Seven of the eight suspects were released Sunday morning. Only Edward Windham, 32, remained in custody as of Monday. He was charged with one count of animal fighting or baiting and was served with four magistrate’s court bench warrants.
