Man Arrested at Courthouse For Stealing Candy While Awaiting Sentence for Theft

SEDGWICK COUNTY – Police say a Wichita man with a sweet tooth was arrested for theft just minutes before he was to appear in court – to be sentenced for theft. The caper went down Tuesday afternoon inside the snack shop at the Sedwick County Courthouse when witnesses observed a man shoplifting candy.

Detectives questioned the suspect, 53-year-old Kevin D. Crowder, and found several pieces of candy on his person…candy valued at about five dollars. Crowder was at the courthouse to be sentenced on a previous theft case.  Police allowed him to hear that sentence before booking him into jail on the new charge.

“I can’t offer an explanation for what was going through his mind,” said Mattingly said.

“This one does make you scratch your head, and it’s kind of surprising,” said Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Dave Mattingly”Unfortunately that’s what we have to deal with sometimes.”
