Every young girl dreams of going to the prom but not all have the means to procure just the right dress for that special night. Even Molly Ringwald had to use her own hands to create that pink masterpiece from the eighties.
Now meet 18-year-old Saira Munoz from Yuba City who had the same dream but a very different approach to realizing it. Lacking the financial resources to buy a dress, the teen organized a school bake sale and hired a another student to help sell move her product: marijuana brownies.
Her business was exposed when a student patron got sick and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. Munoz now faces a felony charge of employing a minor to sell marijuana. On Monday, a judge sentenced her to four years probation and nine days in jail with credit for time served. Munoz is also facing potential deportation after the Sutter County Probation Department called the feds about her conviction. She came to the United States with temporary permission in 2000.
A friend of Munoz, Carlos Robles, said “I was hurt, because she got arrested, and nobody wanted to see somebody we cared about go away…No, there’s people that deserve to be deported, and she just wasn’t one of them. There’s people that do way worse.”
